| OUR SONG POOL The songs in our pool have been collected over the past 50 years. Lynn Rohrbough and the Co-operative Recreation Service (our predecessors) gathered folk songs from all around the world and translated them into English. We continue that tradition by occasionally publishing new folksong collections which also makes new songs available to our custom book clients. The pool also contains many songs contributed by groups such as yours while preparing their own songbooks. Each group benefits from those who have gone before, and also add to the choices available in the future. Today, the song pool contains just about every type of folksong imaginable along with a sizable number of contemporary songs. |
| FORMAT Most of our custom books are printed in the familiar pocketsize: 3-3/4” by 6-3/4”. We have also produced them in a larger size:5-3/8 by 8”. This costs about 15% more than the smaller size. The larger books are frequently produced with a spiral binding which costs$.75 to $2.00 per book. |
| GETTING STARTED Once you have decided that your group would like to compile a songbook of your own, we will send you a listing of all the songs we have already typeset plus other materials, that will help you select the songs for your book. The song list can be sorted by song type, subject, language or country of origin in addition to the usual alphabetical list. After you pick out the songs you want to include, you will send us your title list along with copies of any songs that are not in our pool. We can then typeset these songs for your book. The cost of music typesetting runs generally about $40 per page of music and lyrics. |
| COPYRIGHT PROTECTION Most people who contact us about custom books are very concerned about the issue of copyrights. Most groups we work with tend to favor old songs that are not protected by copyrights. Nonetheless, most of the books contain some songs that are under copyright. Our service includes making arrangements for using these songs. The cost of royalties for the use of copyright songs is the most variable and unpredictable factor in the final cost of these songbooks. There is no way for us to accurately determine the cost of these royalties until we see your songlist and make inquiries with various publishers. We have found that the cost of royalties seldom exceeds 12% of the retail price of the book (many royalties are tied to that price), but it is often much less than that. Our copyright permission procurement fee is $20.00 for known songs. Our copyright research fee for unknown songs is billed at $40.00 per hour. However, before proceeding with the research we will estimate for you what it will cost to research the copyright status for unknown songs. |
| OTHER DETAILS Usually our customers supply the artwork for their book covers. If you wish, we can have an artist make up a cover from your design or sketch. As your book takes form, we will work with you on such things as the organization of the book, illustrations, any foreword or descriptive text, special indexes, cover paper, and ink colors. When we have your book ready to print, we will send you a proof copy to review. This is your chance to catch any possible errors on our part. As soon as we have your OK we can send the book to the printer and you will receive it 4-6 weeks later. |
| TIME FRAME It takes at least 4 months and sometimes up to a year to complete a new custom book. Because of many unpredictable factors, we cannot promise delivery in less than six months. Please keep this in mind as you make your plans. If you are working with a committee you know that this can considerably lengthen the process. If you give yourself and us plenty of time, it will be much easier for us to give you a book that is exactly what you want. |
| COSTS These are base rates for pocket-sized books, printed on white paper with a heavy paper cover. This includes 1 color on the cover and an alphabetical index. These prices do not include royalties, typesetting, color separations (for color photos or color drawings) or shipping. Larger sized books, spiral binding, and Tyvek covers are also available at extra cost. We will print within 10% (eitherway) of the number of copies you order. You will be billed for the number you receive. Payment Schedule-A non-refundable deposit equal to 1/3 of the base rate is required before we begin work on a newbook. An equal payment will be due upon receiptof the proofcopy. The balance of the base rate along with all extra charges is payable upon receipt of the books. |
